Philippe: [00:00:00] Do this thing.
Shubh: Shelby, just hit the record. We're gonna record
Joanna: case. Are we gonna go live? So you
Shubh: we're gonna, you're gonna do the whole thing live?
Joanna: Yeah. So we,
Shubh: what if we have to edit it? What if we say something offensive?
Philippe: No,
Joanna: let's, we can turn off live. Let's
Philippe: do it live.
Joanna: Let's do it live.
Philippe: Holy.
Shubh: Holy shit.
Joanna: What are we gonna
Melissa: say?
So offensive.
Shubh: I'm not worried. Worry about you guys'. No, no. Let's do it.
Joanna: We'll be fine. If we feel like, if we feel like we're going into territory that we're like, Ooh, turn off the live. Then everybody might actually listen more to this
Shubh: video.
Joanna: Yeah, that's right.
Melissa: What's the title here?
Joanna: Ooh. What should our title be today?
Melissa: Going Live With,
Philippe: with Pip and Shep.
Shubh: Your, your business is on the line. It's the whole thing on Instagram is
Melissa: on the line. What's this podcast called? Your business
Shubh: model? That's, that's what the podcast
Chaz: much we know about this podcast.
Joanna: This is how I did know, but I,
Shubh: okay,
Joanna: so we're you guys put it in an acronym and I was really trying to figure out what the acronym was like all day to day basis
Chaz: we're.
Well, here's what we're gonna do. We're gonna start.
Shubh: This is a presentation of Indian dad media in association with. [00:01:00]
Philippe: This is a Thursday Media production
Shubh: Pip Chaz, episode nine. Howdy.
Philippe: Episode nine.
Shubh: Episode nine. Ya bottle.
Philippe: Yep.
Shubh: Uh, we cannot dilly Dally recording this introduction today, Philip.
Philippe: Why?
Shubh: Because Chaz has a date at Taco Bell.
Philippe: Yeah, I got a hard for
Chaz: Taco Bell. Yeah.
Shubh: Yeah.
Philippe: Whatcha gonna get it? Taco
Shubh: Tuesday. And, and sorry, just to, so everybody's clear, this is not like a bit where we can just, uh, mention Taco Bell to try to get them to sponsor this podcast.
This is, uh, it's Tuesday. We're recording on a Tuesday. Chaz heading straight to Taco Bell right after this.
Chaz: Yeah. Shadow Taco
Philippe: Bell.
Shubh: What is, uh,
Philippe: are you gonna get a Doritos Tacos Locos?
Chaz: Uh,
Shubh: yeah. What is the go-to order?
Chaz: Okay, well. Gordita Crunch is mandatory. Mm. That's definitely my favorite. Um, and [00:02:00] then I always get a crunch wrap Supreme as well.
And Oh yeah. I don't know if you guys have been recently, but they've been doing the nacho fries. Have you guys tried these?
Shubh: No, I don't think I've been to Taco Bell since the OTTs Well,
Chaz: the nacho fries, and I don't say this lightly, are the best fast food fries out right now. They're so good. I don't know what they coat them in, but they're, they're delicious.
And I'm not even a big queso guy, but they come with a little cup of queso to dip 'em in and oh my god, they're dynamite. So I'm definitely gonna be partaking in a couple of those.
Philippe: Hey Chaz, what'd you think of Benito?
Shubh: Oh, yes. We are recording this couple days after the Super Bowl.
Chaz: Oh yeah. Uh, I really, really enjoyed the halftime show. I thought it was sick. Um,
Philippe: yeah,
Chaz: so sick.
Shubh: I thought it was incredible. I don't, I I texted you guys, I don't know any Spanish, I don't know any of his songs and I thought it was top five Super Bowl [00:03:00] halftime performance maybe ever.
Philippe: Oh, it was so cool. Really Up to Canada.
Shubh: Yeah, we got a little Canada there.
Chaz: Yeah, that was sick.
Philippe: Angelica, my Tech Thursday's first employee is the biggest Shout out Angelica Bad Bunny fan. Shout out to Angelica. She listens to Bad Bunny in the
Shubh: machine. When? When's an when's? Angelica coming on the podcast.
Philippe: We should have her aunt.
Yeah, I'd
Shubh: like to have her on. I would, uh, we could just spend, uh, Chaz 20 minutes. We could make Phil leave the room for the first part and just instead of a pitch, we could just be like, Hey.
Philippe: Yeah,
Shubh: just seriously, let's talk about what it's like to work.
Philippe: I don't know. I don't know if I wanna have her on. I feel like the only reason I'm allowed to do this podcast is because she is working very hard when I'm, I'm just playing on the podcast.
Yeah. So if we're both in this room, I think Tech Thursday collapses.
Shubh: No, that's, well, we just said she would come in and you, we, we would ask you to leave.
Philippe: Yeah. But I don't know what I do at work anymore. I just,
Shubh: you'd just be like, I really, [00:04:00] I don't know. I need Angelica self. Yeah, that's fair. Uh, that's fair.
Um, okay, so the episode we've got coming in today, uh, taste the City, the founders of Taste the City, Joanna and Melissa, uh, recently on Dragons Den, so
Philippe: Oh, cool.
Shubh: Kind of like our first celebrity get, I would say yes. Shout out. Dragons Down. They shout to Dragons. Dead sponsors trade.
Philippe: Is that you're
Shubh: just
Philippe: ad Libs now, Chas, you're just,
Chaz: well,
Shubh: just Jazz has fully bought it.
He's bought in. He understands the theme of this podcast.
Chaz: I think the key to growing a successful podcast is as many shout outs as possible.
Shubh: Yeah. And bits just sticking with the same bits. Committing to a bit. Yeah. Um, they came in and they were, uh, incredible. They also went live on, uh, on their Instagram live while we were recording the podcast.
So it might feel at times like you're listening to two different shows at the same time as you listened to this [00:05:00] one. Um,
Philippe: yeah. It was,
Shubh: it was chaotic and it was, uh, it
Philippe: was chaotic in the room.
Shubh: It was chaotic. Uh, um, but like a wonderful kind of chaotic, right? Like, uh, the, the, the, there was a lot of energy in that room.
Philippe: Yeah. It was wonderful for me. I felt like the look on your face the whole time show was like, this is not wonderful. This is stressful.
Shubh: You know what's, it is funny is I, when I listened to it back, Phil, it was actually the least I've heard you talk on any of our podcasts. So I think as much as I might've looked overwhelmed, I think you might've just been like, well, I can't, I can't do it.
I can't, I can't keep up guys.
Philippe: That's the work of a good guest, guest host. You know? I,
Shubh: yes. You're just regular co-hosts now.
Philippe: Oh, shit. Let's go.
Shubh: Yeah, we, this is the third time on a recording. We've mentioned that now.
Philippe: Yeah. As you will, we, you will hear I'm doing what Chaz is doing in this intro, which I just added Ad Libs.
I just went, yay. Yo,
Shubh: last week's episode. Rachel Zimmer. Simple Ventures. One of my favorites. I know we talked about this, [00:06:00] uh, in the intro natural last time, but uh, I think we're gonna try to go out to Toronto, try to do some improv, go see Chaz's new apartment. It's gonna be great. Get that all queued up.
Philippe: I also pitch in this show Winnipeg revitalized, which Chaz, I can pitch you in the outro.
Shubh: Yeah.
Philippe: Okay. Get your take.
Shubh: Also shout out to Jets. Go Jets.
Philippe: Sorry, Sean. Go. Jets go. Come on now.
Shubh: That is not their year, guys.
Philippe: They can turn it around after this Olympic break.
Shubh: The other thing I want the listeners to pay close attention to during this episode, 'cause it's almost buried in some of the uh, chaotic energy, is that during this Instagram live, the founders of Taste City in real time.
Connected on Instagram to a manufacture or to a, yeah, to a manufacturer of organic lip products, who they use. Who immediately, Philip then got connected to you and who has subsequently put together the first shipment of [00:07:00] Pips lips, which should be arriving imminently. Correct.
Philippe: His lips is on the way. It is in transit.
I'm also going to Winnipeg over the weekend, and so I can, I can trial run Winnipeg becoming the Las Vegas of Canada.
Shubh: Okay. Well, you're already giving away way too much of this episode. Yes. Let's jump into it. Please enjoy episode nine. Melissa and Joanna from Taste the City. Hi everybody. It's Chubb here.
Are you a startup founder or a scale up exec that's trying to take your company to the next level? Are you looking for the right people to help you do it? Are you looking for people who will help you set culture, who have deep domain expertise, who can figure anything out? Who are Swiss Army knives and unicorns?
How are you finding those people? Are you juggling multiple job boards? Are you screening hundreds of resumes, doing dozens of interviews? Is it working? I bet it's not. Are you [00:08:00] frustrated? I bet you are. Do you know how I know that? Because once upon a time I was you, then I discovered the new network.
Jennifer, Wes and her team at the New Network help Canadian tech companies build and scale high performance teams through a proven unique approach to recruitment and executive search also. They're awesome. I use them to help build most of my team at ZayZoon and I would use them again, and I've recommended them to everyone that I know.
Check out new network.ca for more details. The new network, I couldn't have done it without them. Hello everybody. Welcome to episode nine. No. Nine.
Philippe: Uh, episode. Episode
Shubh: eight.
Philippe: Yeah. Nine.
Shubh: Nine. This is episode nine of your businesses on online. Mm-hmm. Canada's, uh, 61st ranked entrepreneurship podcast. We're actually charting.
That's a real thing. We're on the charts.
Joanna: We're on the charts.
Shubh: We're on the charts. We have, uh, a couple of our guests.
Philippe: Do we spill some water? We,
no,
Joanna: no, we're good. [00:09:00] We're good. We're good. We're good.
Shubh: There's a phone holder and we are
Philippe: live on Instagram as well.
Shubh: We are live, we're live on Instagram. We are live on Instagram with, um, uh, Joanna Pariso.
Melissa Denberg from Taste The City.
Joanna: Yes. Yes.
Shubh: One of, I think, uh, the hottest startups in the country right now. Is that true?
Philippe: I think Well, uh, you, you, yeah. You guys are, are you guys were just on Dragons Den.
Melissa: Yeah.
Philippe: Yeah, we
Melissa: were. Yeah. That was very
cool.
Philippe: Which is very Did they invest?
Melissa: Yeah, they did. They sure did.
Invest.
Philippe: Are you allowed to say that on this?
Melissa: Yeah, we're allowed to. You're allowed now. Now.
Philippe: That's incredible. Hey.
Joanna: Yeah.
Philippe: Hey, wait. Hold on.
Melissa: Can we tell our hello everyone who has just joined? We're live on the podcast. Oh
Joanna: yeah.
Melissa: With two people that we don't know the name of. No, I'm kidding. He
Joanna: pip something.
Melissa: Pip and shrub.
He's
Joanna: doing Lip chop Pip. Lip chop. Yeah.
Shubh: This is chaos. I love it. This
Melissa: is already, chaos is, we're so sorry if you just joined.
Shubh: No, please. This is madness. Um, so guys, the way we like to always start this off, um, uh, is [00:10:00] could you maybe just tell us a bit about yourselves? And what you do. And then, uh, we will just have some follow up.
Melissa: All right. Let's do it. You go first 'cause you like to talk.
Joanna: Thank you so much.
Shubh: I am getting the impression everybody in this room likes to talk.
Joanna: Yeah, yeah. Um, so we're taste the city. We specialize in digital guidance. So essentially when you think of taste, we kind of even go beyond food. It's like who you trust, where they go, and um, where you can hop between a few different places and explore the city.
So we always like to have these prepackaged experiences where you just pick your start time and we send you somewhere to go and you show up and there's food and drinks and it's all prepaid. And then after about 30 minutes you get another text message and where to go next. And you hop up and walk to the next spot.
And you're usually visiting about three to five places in walking distance. And it's all kind of prepaid, pre gratuity, pre-planned.
Shubh: So Cool.
Joanna: Yeah.
Shubh: When, when did you guys start this company?
Joanna: Well, we started it about two years ago. Yeah. And, uh, I was studying, I was a student at U of C Urban Studies major, [00:11:00] and, uh, oh, I, I, I was studying essentially like, um, how you turn space into place using digital technology.
So I was creating like pretty catch augment. It's a pretty right.
Chaz: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Joanna: So like thinking of Pokemon Go and the like phenomenons around, like, you know, how we were. Motivating people to go walk around cities. And this was during a time when downtowns were really looking for, um, ways that we could revitalize them.
So I was studying in Italy as one does, um, when they're a student. Cool. And studying local food culture and like, as a part of like sustainable tourism. And, and I wanted to do food tour, but I was like, I don't wanna be in a group with a guide in the afternoon. And like trying to go recreate the product on my own was like overwhelming in Florence.
Yeah. Like where do I go? What do I eat? How long will it take? So I came back and. Connected with a developer, created some wire frames and uh, built the damn thing and went to market
Philippe: in Florence too. Like, uh, Leonard DaVinci would, oh, you love
Joanna: Florence. He was inspired. And
Shubh: all Phil talks about is, you know what we need to [00:12:00] create to solve the Canadian productivity crisis.
We need to recreate Florence. We
Philippe: do. We really
Shubh: do. And the During the Renaissance,
Joanna: yeah, they probably do that at that new indoor space in Chinook that you can go to Egypt right now. Like, oh, like an augmented reality
Shubh: experience. Wait, can we bring it back to the startup? So you kind of really quickly glossed over, you had this idea, came back, hired a developer.
So something we talk a little bit or trying to talk more about with founders. 'cause we want people to hear this who aren't entrepreneurs and be like me, hey, maybe this is possible. What was like, what, when you came back and had that deal, what was the first thing you did?
Joanna: Uh, can I make money off of it? So I like built, like how much would it cost me to actually, like, in an Excel spreadsheet was like, how much would it cost me to like get these, like went and looked at menu items and like if I put this together and then I put a group of people together.
Like I got like five friends, including the developer. Yeah. And I was like, Hey, everybody pay this much. We're gonna go to these restaurants. I called the restaurants ahead of time. I was like, I know it's weird, but I'm gonna come in, just order some chicken and I'm gonna leave. Can you charge my credit card?
And like, and then just pay and [00:13:00] like, just tested it out. And then everybody that went my, including my dev, I was like, how can we digitize this? How can I make this automated? Nice. And so then she was like, you probably need in and around this match and like think simply. And so went back. Found like a, an aunt, my angel aunt that like gave me an initial Oh, I thought you
Melissa: were saying I'm an angel.
You're an angel. Just pointed at me
Shubh: like
Melissa: thank you. I am an angel.
Shubh: I, I get called angel ant a lot.
Joanna: Yeah. Well that's
Shubh: a good,
Joanna: good segue. 'cause Melissa, then I needed a marketing component, so I called my grade one bestie, which Melissa, no way.
Shubh: Shut up. You guys have been friends since grade one. Grade one.
Amazing.
Joanna: Melissa moved away in grade two.
Shubh: Yeah. Oh, wait, wait, hold on a
Joanna: sec. And we've been pen pals our whole lives. We've never lived
Shubh: to the same. What? Wait, hold on. You were, wait, sorry. I don't, yes, I do mean to interrupt. Uh, you were friends in grade one?
Joanna: Yeah. Grade when
Shubh: you left?
Melissa: I left right after.
Joanna: Yeah.
Shubh: And you remained friends
Joanna: this whole time? Yeah. I used to be sent on like the Greyhound bus out to Sam and Arm to visit her when I was like 10, eight.
Melissa: She was like the friend who my family would like take in, who was like a little rough around the [00:14:00] edges and taught me about Destiny's Child and Backstreet Boys.
And my parents were like rough around the edges. We don't know about that. And rough around the edge just means. That she listened to. Backstreet Boys, I mean, was
Shubh: grew up
Joanna: in a very,
Shubh: I think, conservative describing
Joanna: and rough around the edges was Destiny's Child.
Shubh: Okay. Describing,
Joanna: I I was wild
Melissa: describing.
That's what I mean. You're wild. You taught me how to like do prank calls. You know,
Joanna: my
Shubh: describing someone is rough around the edges and then saying, they introduced me to Backstreet Boys incredible dichotomy. I'm
Melissa: rough. I really like to bug her.
Shubh: Okay. So you, you called up your best friend from first grade who you'd went to school with for exactly one year.
Melissa: Yes, one year.
Shubh: And somehow stayed in touch with, which is, that's, that's a whole podcast episode. In of itself.
Melissa: Well, that's Joanna who never gives up for you right there.
Shubh: Yeah. Perfect. Then you went to your circle and then brought back together. Then you guys raised a little bit of angel money and then you just, you put it together like, just like you prototyped it.
My God, I love this story.
Joanna: Yeah.
Philippe: How's it going? How many suds are you [00:15:00] guys in right now?
Joanna: Oh gosh. We ate Victoria, Vancouver, Edmonton, Calgary, Banff.
Shubh: What about Winnipeg?
Joanna: Uh oh. We will be in Winnipeg. Ooh,
Shubh: let's loves
Joanna: Winnipeg.
Shubh: I'm
Joanna: from Toronto and soon to be Niagara Falls. We just got off a call today with Niagara Parks, which like they're so hard to get in with and they loved us.
We did working with the government.
Shubh: Oh yeah.
Joanna: Don't tell anyone. Don't tell.
Shubh: Kidding. Yeah. It's not the Feds though. Yeah. What, you know, because people, when they say the feds, we have the feds, you know, the feds.
Joanna: We have the firefighters. Firefighters, the federal firefighters.
Shubh: Yeah.
Philippe: Can you do that? Can you like, stop in at a, like a fire hall and, and you'll get to ride the truck.
They, they'll
Shubh: make you spaghetti and beat,
Joanna: I believe Melissa. I think if Melissa and I walked into a fire, they would let us look at the truck. Yeah.
Shubh: I
Joanna: think if we bring children,
Shubh: yeah. I suspect I would have less luck if I walked into a fire hall and asked for a tour of the firetruck. Um, okay. So that's incredible.
I think you guys probably get asked about this all the time, but, um, you kind of went through a big milestone over the last several months. Why [00:16:00] don't you walk us through. Okay. You've got some traction. You were in a few cities, then something maybe formative happened. Would you like to tell our audience is obviously bigger than the audience that you've previously been exposed to.
That's very funny.
Joanna: Which one?
Shubh: Yeah. Yeah. Tell us, tell us what's happened lately. Where things, was it
Joanna: dragons,
Shubh: was it Well, I think it's dragons.
Melissa: It's
Joanna: obviously
Melissa: dragons.
Joanna: There's a lot of things. It could have been Shrewsbury. Shrewbury is very exciting. Nobody knows
Melissa: about Shrewbury.
Shubh: What? Shrewsbury.
Joanna: Yeah. What's Shrewbury?
Yeah. See they're exciting. Yeah. But nobody, Shewsbury is a lovely quaint town in the uk. A and we're gonna like pilot our next. No. How did that come about? Um, well I went on a trade mission with Calgary Economic Development. So like Take tact. Shout out Calgary. Take Yeah. Shout out to CED. Yeah. And like take the trade accelerator program and went, um.
Was like connected with an incubator out of Telford uk and they were like, we have these routes for you. Come and like, already set it all up and like, we're gonna set you up with a bank account and we're gonna like get the ribbon cutting. And like, we're rolling out, we're like, [00:17:00] please bring your product here.
And so this was a very interesting avenue for us to now explore. And like when we launched in the uk Where would you have gone first?
Shubh: Shrewsbury,
Joanna: London, Shrewsbury.
Shubh: No, no. I always,
Melissa: I always thought Shrewsbury too.
Joanna: Yeah, we're gonna bring like a delegation of London, like over Shrewsbury. Let's
Shubh: go. Shrusbury
Joanna: Tourism is gonna be very excited to create this collaboration.
So Thank you Calgary. Economic development.
Shubh: Uh, okay. And then Dragon Den. Dragons Den Dragon. Sorry.
Melissa: Dragons Den is a thing that most people know about.
Shubh: Yeah. Dragons Den for, I mean, we do have some US listeners, dragons Den Canadian, uh,
Joanna: shark
Shubh: Tank precursor to Sharks.
Joanna: Yeah, it's the og. Yeah, the original
Philippe: Who's, who's on Dragons Den these days?
Who are the dragons?
Joanna: Okay, we got Michelle Romana. Okay, we got Arlene Dickinson.
Shubh: Yep.
Joanna: We got, um, Manje. Minhas. We got Brian. Brian
Melissa: Smore.
Joanna: And Wes Dunno, his last name.
Shubh: Cool. Some greats.
Joanna: Yeah, we got [00:18:00] Brian though. Brian was our dragon.
Shubh: Okay.
Joanna: Yeah, he was our man.
Shubh: She went on dragons stand. They actually liked your idea.
Joanna: Oh yeah. And like actually though, so we had to choose which Dragons would come and be able to, like, we brought a chef from Toronto. They were like showing them the product, but we could only choose three dragons to come and. Like, do the tasting. Do the tasting and get all Why, why was that their
Shubh: limitation?
Joanna: They were, yeah, they have all five off camera. 'cause they need to leave like two in the seats and so only three. Oh, I see. Okay. We set up three different tables for them to go to and they, so we were gonna get the Three Ladies Dragons. Um, we messed up and forgot that one of the Lady Dragons is vegetarian and it was a tuna dish.
So last minute we had to swap out. So we swapped out. Um, I think we put Wes in and we just like left Brian out. Like Brian wasn't even on. Like, who's Brian? Like Yeah.
Shubh: Yeah.
Joanna: We just like
Melissa: didn't even, who's Brian? I knew who Brian was,
Joanna: but, well, we knew who he was. But you didn't invite him to do it? It wasn't on our list of
Melissa: like investors that we were trying to get.
There
Shubh: was a
Joanna: lesson
Shubh: here. The, the harder
Joanna: you try, but, 'cause no, this is better if you say no to them.
Shubh: Yeah.
Joanna: And you don't include them. They That's right. Have to get total [00:19:00] fomo.
Philippe: Yeah. Well this podcast is, is. Very similar, if not more, uh, scrupulous than Dragon Stan. Yeah. Okay. I thought so. Okay. Yeah, it's a very, you know, well, well, you know, she will sort of let you know what's going on, but, uh, uh, understand that, that we've been called the Simon Cows.
Melissa: Oh, as soon as I walked into this room, I have been shaking in my
Philippe: face.
Shubh: Famous,
Philippe: so
Shubh: famously
Philippe: sounded really hot in here.
Shubh: Simon. Miguel. Famously from Shrewsbury. From
Joanna: from Shrewsbury.
Philippe: That's right.
Shubh: I mean, or maybe,
Philippe: maybe, yeah. The
Melissa: vibe I got.
Shubh: Okay. So let's explain this podcast to you. Um, okay.
Melissa: The,
Shubh: um, business podcast generally kind of boring.
Joanna: Yes.
Shubh: Not enough. Canadians are starting. Businesses or becoming entrepreneurs are going through the journey you've been on. Um, we want to have a little fun, obviously, first and foremost, make this whole world a little more accessible to people so people have come on and will pitch ideas now. [00:20:00] I love this.
When we first started it was like, well, maybe people will come on and pitch real business ideas and we'll help them like pick 'em apart and help 'em get started. And then we realized very quickly that that would lead us down a path like other business podcasts, which would be somewhat less enjoyable for us as participants.
Joanna: Yeah, yeah. It's like for a different audience.
Shubh: Yeah. And so what's happened is people have just come on and pitched some, uh, fun ideas. Uh, automated barbecue cover. That was one of my pitches. Uh, pip's lips. Good
Joanna: pitch Pip lips. So this is pip The lip chat.
Shubh: Lip care Lip. Sorry, it's not lip chat. We pair care,
Joanna: lip care
Shubh: for men with very small.
Joanna: We have like, we have a connection to like, amazing founder,
Shubh: no
Joanna: way. Or organics who could maybe make, make you some like labels for Pip's list. She could do it. She could do it. And we love her. And you'll like her. You'll get addicted. Okay. Organic. Cory.
Shubh: Oh yeah. That's, we love to shout out. Well, you guys get it, you, so one of our things we love to do is shout out potential sponsors.
So like, oh yeah. Yell, she sponsors
Joanna: our lips. She'll make sure her lips like are like, so taken care of. [00:21:00]
Shubh: And, uh, yeah, I think there's
Philippe: not enough
Shubh: people. Co Cory's Organics brings you. Pip slips. Pip slips. Yeah. Hip
Joanna: slips.
Shubh: The hip slips. Powered by Corey. Organic hip lips.
Philippe: Power
Joanna: powered by co organics. I love it.
Yeah, it's awesome. Just collaboration's happening in the room here.
Philippe: But we also, we also doesn't, also don't have enough like entrepreneurs here in Canada. And so this podcast is just a form for all of the bad ideas so that outside of this room, all of the good ideas can take, take flight to us.
Joanna: Speak
Melissa: for yourself.
Joanna: I, my ideas are amazing. Yeah, I was gonna say like, we have a lot of great ones.
Shubh: Well, we're very ready. Um, just one other of our favorite ideas was a giant pierogi, which would replace pizza as the, uh, anchor to like a Super Bowl party.
Melissa: Okay.
Shubh: So giant rogie.
Joanna: We
Shubh: just didn't need a
Melissa: giant pierogi.
Joanna: Yeah.
Shubh: Yeah. That was a The bro rogie.
Yeah.
Joanna: The bro rogie.
Shubh: Yeah. Now, once you guys get all, obviously you're gonna leave here and binge listen to all previous five episodes on the street. Yes. Yes.
Joanna: Weep came prepared organic design. Oh my God, she's so excited.
Shubh: Oh, [00:22:00] she's already,
Joanna: yeah, she's on
Shubh: the last. She's on the last. Guys. I'm so much olders. So much.
I'm so much a pod made
Melissa: you a connection.
Shubh: I'm so much older than the three year. I'm like, what? What? You can put yourself on the internet in real time. Now we're streaming on Twitch right now.
Joanna: Can't believe I tuned in at the episode, so my lip liner
Melissa: is Curl Beauty.
Shubh: Yeah. Just keep going. Keep going. Uh, I'm, I'm wearing Uggs.
Melissa: We we're not for big brands here. You can keep that quiet.
Shubh: We are though. Yeah, yeah, yeah. We need that sponsorship. We need money.
Joanna: We'll also be
Shubh: sponsored. I mean, this is still my podcast. I think. It doesn't feel that way. Uh,
Joanna: welcome to the Taste City podcast.
Shubh: Yeah, that's right. We've now rebrand. We've rebranded,
Joanna: we, we've had a rebrand.
Shubh: Uh, okay. So, uh, Melissa, Joanna, with all that context.
Joanna: Yes.
Shubh: Okay. Do you have an idea? Or more than one idea you would like to pitch us today.
Joanna: Listen,
Melissa: we have so many ideas and actually both these ideas we've thought of together. Okay. I'll go with the first one.
Shubh: Okay.
Melissa: [00:23:00] Okay. And I really want this to happen like really bad for myself.
It's a condo. Okay. Condo living. Beautiful. There's all these gorgeous, maybe not gorgeous. They can be made. Gorgeous. Yeah. So all these office buildings, high sky, we're gonna turn it into a women's only condo.
Shubh: Wow.
Melissa: Okay.
Shubh: Love it.
Melissa: Women can only live there. We're gonna have themed party rooms. Each room is gonna be like gorgeous with like velvet, couches and just, and a, and feel like a really safe space.
There's gonna be a spa in each condo. Yeah.
Joanna: Spa downstairs. A Botox lady nail.
Melissa: That's my pitch. Yeah, that's
Shubh: it. I love it.
Joanna: Yeah.
Shubh: Everything. I've got a bunch of questions. I also love it.
Philippe: Yeah.
Shubh: Um, I'm not, I don't want this to go to a weird place. Okay. Are people from opposite genders allowed to visit?
Joanna: Yeah.
Like
Joanna: you
Shubh: have be able to, oh yeah, that, that's it.
That's,
Melissa: it's women living. So you know, it's like
Shubh: it's, and no dudes, they can't come. Dudes
Joanna: living. No, they, they could, like I, hold on a sec. A boyfriend could live there, but like, he's not changing the aesthetic, you know, [00:24:00] like he's coming into your space. I see. You know? All right. I feel so often when we decorate places, like we're not allowed to express ourselves.
Melissa: Well, and I would like to say it's just flipping it, you know? It's like the who's on the least? It has to be a woman. I
Shubh: see. I like the idea. I love this idea. I like the idea though of when you decide to live with maybe a member of the opposite sex, you have to move out.
Melissa: Yeah. I think I like
Shubh: that. It's like that exclusive only honey, this is great.
Would you like to move in together?
Melissa: It's better.
Shubh: Yeah.
Melissa: And then you have a special room even for like entrepreneurs, so all these women can come together and think like a think tank in there. Also,
Shubh: imagine how much more scrutiny you'd put up among on this potential life partner if you knew you had to move as soon as you agreed to move in together.
It's
Melissa: better for women and. It's shown that more and more women are single now and want options and are living on their own and happy. And so we're just, yeah, we're just going with the trend. We're just creating a space for them.
Shubh: I actually think there's a market for this. I got a question. Um, what would it be called?
Wait. Oh no, you do your question first. We have, think about [00:25:00] a name, man.
Joanna: While this was like a couple years ago, we had this
Melissa: idea, it's just not a couple years ago. This was like this summer.
Joanna: Everything feels
Melissa: like
Joanna: a
Shubh: couple days. Yeah, yeah.
Philippe: Sorry, my question is like, if you had a question when we're looking at actually, uh, doing some of these, uh, um, commercial real estate, uh, redevelopments into residential
Joanna: mm-hmm.
Philippe: Um, the big problem is like bathrooms and floor plans are very strange.
Joanna: Doors are expensive.
Philippe: Doors are expensive. But I'm so curious, like, would there, is there a world here where like just the, the living rooms and bedrooms and bathrooms are part of the, the individual homes and then the kitchen. Is on the main floor, so like big beautiful test kitchens.
And so you're cooking with all these women and, and there's like, the floor plan is just around the middle and or around the outside. In the middle is like beautiful test kitchens, beautiful living rooms.
Melissa: That's kind
Joanna: of cute. I think, I think it could work in a women only space. In a way I'm in only space because we've been in a lot of like tech bro spaces and we see how the kitchens are taken care of.
Philippe: Yeah.
Joanna: Uh, and not, not, not, it's like not, there is a different standard of living in that capacity, you know?
Shubh: Yeah. You know what? [00:26:00] Tech bros do better.
Melissa: Different options.
Joanna: D levels do better. I was at, I love the kitchen three years and like the fights over the kitchen and like the things that like, just like throw the kitchen
Shubh: has to be clean.
The
Melissa: kitchen
Shubh: has to, the kitchen And
Melissa: girls can be gross though too. That's
Joanna: just, just like when it comes to like, you know, clothes all over the bedroom, it's usually bathrooms, not kitchens.
Shubh: Okay. Women's only condo.
Joanna: Women's only contact.
Shubh: Phil has added a, a shared communal space if you want it. Yeah. It's not my space.
Maybe that's right. Yeah. Yeah. He's just, just to be real clear suggestions, we're all suggest, him and I are just making suggestions. And
Melissa: we're gonna get the Teen Motel girls too. Oh yeah.
Joanna: The June Motel girls, they like go in and I convert, I dunno what this is, motels like into like cool spaces again. And you can vibe to cooler
Melissa: motels.
Joanna: Yeah. To cooler motels that you would wanna hang out in.
Melissa: We want it to be, so the original idea is we want it to be a TV show. So basically the TV show is converting one of these buildings into a women only space using the June
Shubh: Right motel. But I think the tv, the TV show could continue like a reality show that follow the people.
Yeah.
Melissa: Yes or no follows each of these converted spaces.
Shubh: Oh, just [00:27:00] the space. '
Melissa: cause how fun. It's like TLC, like flipping a space, but it's. These giant girly condos.
Joanna: You have something there though? You could do like interviews with the resident. Yeah. You just keep, crawl their everyday life. Keep it, keep, keep it going dog.
Like this is my like fifth dog that I'm
Philippe: not, but it's also like then, because if you get a boy, if you get a boyfriend, you have to move out. I love that. So everyone is so judgmental about all the boys. Oh my gosh.
Joanna: Think how
Philippe: wanna live with them.
Joanna: Oh my gosh. And think about like, the girls and he comes into the kitchen, would be watching, the girls would be watching, like the boys that come in, every girl's sitting at their window be like, oh my gosh, she's with Josh.
Or it's like Josh is back. Oh my gosh.
Melissa: Or it's like they're happy for them. You know? It's like about, it's like everyone cheers. Like she's moving on, she's getting married.
Joanna: There's said everybody, like, she's not back from date night. Like, should I be worried?
Shubh: Is there a risk that let's say, um, not me. Let's say a a, a woman in my life has the beautiful corner condo.
Joanna: Mm-hmm. Okay.
Shubh: And maybe the, everybody else isn't sure about the potential partner, but they're like, well, they move in together. I see that unit's available.
Joanna: Yeah. They're gonna like try, promote that relationship. So [00:28:00] it's gonna help like
Shubh: encouragement. Watch my wife Loves was like,
Joanna: this is the new Real Housewives.
Shubh: She would 100% watch this program. Yeah. I can con, I would confirm with Rita afterwards, she will watch this. We
Joanna: need to go back to like when it was the Glory Days of reality television. Like before it was produced, like where it's actually
Shubh: raw, when it was real
Joanna: and was
Shubh: real. Okay. So I need a name for the building or the development, and then I need a name now for the subsequent show.
Melissa: Okay.
Shubh: And I think there's two shows I'll work
Joanna: on it. There's,
Shubh: there's, there's a show
Joanna: we're
Shubh: covered
Joanna: that this two shows.
Shubh: There's a property, there's a, there's a, there's a Property, property Brothers version.
Melissa: June
Joanna: Motel
Melissa: Girls. Yep.
Shubh: But then there's also the, uh, people just living in there.
Joanna: Yeah.
Shubh: Right? Yeah.
Joanna: Yeah.
Shubh: They just living there.
Joanna: The people on our Instagram Live are gonna be like, they're starting a condo building. Like what's happening? We're, we're still taste the city, you guys, it's okay. Yeah.
Shubh: That this is a fake podcast.
Joanna: Taste the City
Shubh: Living. No real podcast. Fake ideas. Are there
Philippe: any ideas on the chat?
Joanna: Oh, do you guys have
Philippe: ideas?
Joanna: If you have like, business ideas that you think that we should shout out or
Shubh: names, or names for the, you have
Joanna: names
Shubh: for our women
Joanna: only condo?
Shubh: I'm scared to come up with names. What about, um, I don't think we should even [00:29:00] suggest names. You know what my name suggestion is? Whatever you feel like
this is. Wait, so wait, so this idea, what Phil and I now do is we rate your idea. And we rate it on a very traditional score at a 75 salsas. When you listened to episode one, you will understand, but the first pitch we ever had was an app that scored salsa.
Melissa: Okay. Okay. Salsa.
Shubh: Yeah. You know, because you forget, you go to the store, you buy a salsa, it's a slightly different salsa.
Yeah. Food sparks big time. It's food
Melissa: scoring.
Shubh: So it's at a 75 Celsius. The women's only condo, women's only condo plus dual reality programs to support this condo
Joanna: hate hitting rate. I feel like it
Philippe: was this
Joanna: competition.
Philippe: I didn't know the name, the name, I'm thinking the name. What about something around like, I'm, I'm thinking like fem fatal or something like that.
Like something around there. You know, what do you think about that?
Melissa: That is, I was trying to think like, something really simple. Like even something as simple as like pink. Like something so stupid that's almost just like, yeah, that's pretty good.
Shubh: Yeah.
Melissa: [00:30:00] You
Philippe: know what I mean? Mean some of these weird buildings, like there's a building in Calgary named Chocolate.
Yeah,
Melissa: yeah.
Philippe: The,
Joanna: the colors building.
Philippe: Yeah,
Joanna: I know the colors building.
Philippe: Why would I wanna live in chocolate? But like, I would definitely live in, we could
Joanna: just
Melissa: call
Joanna: it there.
She's the,
Shubh: for
Joanna: you guys,
Shubh: what would you call the, okay. What
Joanna: would
Shubh: you call the show? Ooh. It'd be like where reinventing her.
Joanna: Something like instead of
Shubh: like reinventing, there's a
Melissa: movie called her. So
Shubh: we What about reinventing her?
Melissa: Reinventing. That's actually
Shubh: just for the building part. And then,
Melissa: oh my gosh.
That's like, or building
Joanna: her.
Melissa: I like,
Joanna: pun intended,
Melissa: reinventing her. That's
Shubh: building. Building
Philippe: her up.
Joanna: Yeah. Building her up. Yeah.
Philippe: Yeah. To be, I love
Joanna: her.
Philippe: I love this concept tv.
Joanna: Yeah, it was so good. Great idea. Loving this. Okay. Yeah.
Philippe: We'll be
Melissa: talking to movie
Joanna: movies. Now we know, now we know how to raise capital.
We've learned how to do this. Like a year ago, we never knew how to do this's, so now we know we're like second time founders. Now for our second business,
Shubh: it's easy
Joanna: Napkin idea. Round open, uh, yep. 10 million [00:31:00] value. I was gonna say 10 million too.
Shubh: You just have to come on a podcast where people pitch fake ideas.
Philippe: I'm so
Shubh: sorry. Please don't hurt yourselves. Um, for
Philippe: those listening, the, the, the table that they're sitting at almost
Shubh: fell. They got so excited about that. The fact they both picked 10 million is the val. They did what every great VC does when they, because every v people don't know this. When you pitch to a vc, they go, okay, you on a count of three, we each say what we think the company's worth.
And they go, 1, 2, 3, 7 0.2 million. And if they get it right, they just, high five, double five didn't
Philippe: double high five.
Shubh: And then the table flips. And then, uh, I've never seen a table flip towards people in enjoy instead of away from people in anger.
Joanna: Same.
Shubh: It is a tippy table.
Joanna: Yeah. Yeah.
Shubh: We'll talk to the,
Joanna: yeah.
The engineers
Chaz: are in
Shubh: this, this, this room needs a reinventing of her.
Joanna: Yeah. Like, I think, like, aren't these like inserts where you could put, um, like flowers or something? It looks like? Yeah,
Shubh: totally. Yeah. Sure. Yeah, we can do that.
Joanna: I think that that's, I think
Shubh: I, I really like the, [00:32:00] the tanned foam though. You guys don't love that.
Joanna: It's
Shubh: a Yeah, it's a choice.
Philippe: It's a choice.
Joanna: Okay. Is it for sound like it, it's actually,
Philippe: it's, it's,
Shubh: it's to make it hotter. Oh. Uh, okay. Wait, where were we? We're gonna rate this
Philippe: idea. Yeah. No, I think, to me, I love this like, new, like, uh, uh, the old, um, uh, the guy who did, uh. Um, rework. Yeah. You just raised on like a similar kind of like new living.
Yeah. So this is actually kind of a brilliant idea. I think a lot of people would get behind and you're totally right about, like I more women are single for longer. Um, and I think this actually sounds like a great place. Obviously not for me, but I would, I would, I could understand why. People would want to live here.
So,
Shubh: you know what, the craziest thing I just thought is if you were dating someone there, I, I've been thinking about it largely from the, the residents perspective, but you might like visiting this place so much that you might resist committing to a live-in relationship because you know you're gonna lose that spot.
Right? So that's an unintended negative consequence. Well, ill have to figure that one out.
Philippe: That's right. I do love gathering with the gas. [00:33:00] So I might just,
Shubh: maybe theres a, maybe there's a, there's like another condo building very close by. Very similarly, uh, uh, like boys. Only a adorned No, no, that's, that's where the couples go.
Joanna: Oh yes, yes, yes. You have like, you know, you have your breakfast, it's just
Shubh: as
Joanna: nice, like you have to have walking distance.
Shubh: It's
Joanna: restaurants. Live the city. Live the city.
Shubh: Oh, you got a rating force? Yeah. 75 SALs.
Philippe: This is a 65 salsa idea for me. Pretty good. Mostly because I'm, I think it's high. Yeah, it is high.
It could be higher, but I'm thinking about like, I would not, like a men's only space would be horrible. Like does this just mean like my spaces become more like male dominated and that'd be horrible, but Yeah. Yeah. You know, it's a great idea.
So,
Shubh: or then you got those dudes who are the worst, who are like, oh, why don't we have a men's only building?
Philippe: Yeah.
Shubh: You
Philippe: creating more of those
Joanna: had men's only
Shubh: buildings. Nobody like
Joanna: the petroleum club, only let women in in like 1989
Shubh: or something. Don't get me started on what, where people could not go. Just uh, so I just think that, uh, those buildings would be the worst and gross and [00:34:00] boring, but a women's only building would Sounds like a ton of fun.
Philippe: It does. It does sound like a great job.
Shubh: I also love this idea. Okay. Uh, I think the idea itself is great. I think the go to market is incredible because I think there is a large portion of the community that'd be like, I would definitely live there. You know, I've got three girls, so if they were like moving to a different city and they were like, I would like, oh my God, that
Joanna: every dad across
Shubh: the
Joanna: country is like, you go into that.
Get on the wait list for my daughter to be in the girls only
Shubh: building condo. Yeah. I said, you have to earn your own way.
Joanna: Yeah.
Shubh: But I bought you one.
Joanna: Yeah. I, you,
Shubh: this is the only one I will pay for you.
Joanna: No boyfriends allowed.
Shubh: Yeah, yeah, yeah. So, uh, I love it. Uh, go to market. Uh. Great, uh, idea. Great. I'm gonna go 71 CELs.
Ooh,
Philippe: those are great. That's a
Shubh: great, yeah, I don't usually go that high. Is
Joanna: it outta
Shubh: hundred I 75? Obviously. Gosh. I was
Joanna: like, I was like,
Shubh: why would,
Joanna: why we celebrating?
Shubh: Why wouldn't you [00:35:00] automatically guess degrees?
Joanna: I guess I,
Shubh: so what happened was Phil and I were like, how many sauces should the scorp be out of?
And then we both wrote down a number and then it was 75 and then we double half five.
Joanna: Oh, the table flipped over.
Shubh: Yeah, yeah, yeah. And then I tripped over this thing. It was a whole thing.
Joanna: There's a lot going on in this space, so I understand
Shubh: it's a tiny hot room with a lot of things in it. Yeah.
Joanna: A lot of tripping hazard.
Shubh: As this podcast continues, its um, unimpeded upward trajectory. One day we'll have like windows.
Joanna: We actually have like a really good, we're gonna start our own podcast and compete with you. But like, no, I mean, like, we'll,
Shubh: well, I mean, maybe,
Joanna: well, no, we've been talking for a while of like how to make it industry, even in the restaurant side of things for restaurant podcasts.
And so, um,
Shubh: oh wow.
Joanna: But we, that's a great
Shubh: idea.
Joanna: So
what,
Shubh: this is a pitch.
Joanna: You're
Shubh: pitching us another idea,
Joanna: kind of, this is our next pitch kind of thing. So, um,
Shubh: we've got a lot of experience starting podcast. Julia, A bitch is
Joanna: this, well, this is like actually kind of what we're gonna do. So it's a little bit of like exposing it.
Melissa's like, what?
Melissa: Wait, I thought we were okay.
Joanna: What do you wanna
Melissa: do? Whatever you,
Joanna: you want.
Melissa: I did the one I wanted. You do the one you want.
Joanna: Oh, damn it. Now I have to choose. [00:36:00] Um, well anyways, we just think so for the podcast, I can't wait. I don't feel like this is the idea. It's they're gonna judge me on salsa.
I'm like,
Shubh: please listen, if there, there are, hold on a sec, Joanna. Just to make you feel more comfortable, make your choices. If there are two people who are completely ill-equipped to judge someone's podcast idea, it's us.
Joanna: It's us. So we really think that the podcast, especially when people are watching it, like most often people are watching it on TikTok or whatnot.
Shubh: Yeah, I know what those things are.
Joanna: And like TikTok is a good place. I spend 30 minutes on a treadmill on TikTok every day to just like, no,
Shubh: it's a great,
Joanna: okay. What's going on?
Shubh: Yeah.
Joanna: Um, but I think it's boring to just like watch it like straight on, right. This in this camera view.
Shubh: Yeah.
Joanna: And so we've thought about like doing it at the restaurant, having like the piano, playing in the background and having it and getting that, like the vibe that they used to do in like the 1950s that you're in, like in somebody's living room could like at a dinner
Shubh: party.
Server. Party. Phil, you could, you could, you could be the actor who plays the server on every episode.
Joanna: Yeah. Yeah. So we're thinking of doing it like prologue is one of our restaurants, um, in the Dorian up
Shubh: prologue.
Joanna: Uh, so yeah, [00:37:00] shout out to prologue and they have the, one of the piano players is a friend of mine, so I'm gonna see if we can like do something like
Shubh: that's
Philippe: so
Joanna: fun.
Shubh: Best, what would you do in the, like what would the talk, what would the content be? Yeah,
Joanna: we might let that know. Won't
Melissa: we
talk
Joanna: about, I mean
Shubh: it doesn't strike me that you guys have a lot of trouble coming up with stuff to talk
Melissa: about. Yeah. Like how does Jacob all Lorde relate to the restaurants in the food industry?
Shubh: Yeah. Yeah. I don't know who that
Melissa: is. Do you know who they, dunno who that is. That's okay. Who is
Joanna: Kissing Booth? Have you watched Kissing Booth? Yeah. Okay. He's the hot guy in Kissing Booth.
Shubh: Oh yeah. Yeah. I mean, or
Melissa: like, you know, chef's horror stories. We love to hear just the off the cuff,
Joanna: what they've had to, or like anybody that works in restaurant industries, like we might even like go find some good like Reddit ones and like read them out and like talk about, read off some Reddit
Melissa: stories.
That's always fun.
Joanna: Wow. Yeah. I can do voices. Yeah.
Shubh: Oh
Joanna: yeah.
Shubh: What kind of voices can you
Melissa: hear? I'm literally
Joanna: kidding. No, no. Yeah. If we start doing You gotta buy some drinks. She said to do a
Melissa: Swiss accent.
Joanna: A Swedish accent. I started a Swedish accent. Swiss accent. Can you do a Swedish accent?
Philippe: Yeah. Did something the other day.
Well, he did a Finn accent, but it's your Swedish [00:38:00] accent. Go. I'm gonna do the same thing. Taste this. You did?
Shubh: Yeah. It's pretty good. Pretty
Joanna: good.
Shubh: Welcome to the podcast.
Joanna: Okay. We've, we've digressed.
Shubh: I don't know that we have most of my time here is spent making voices. Well, I was doing Elmo earlier, so Yeah.
Yeah.
Joanna: Okay.
Shubh: Uh, wait, what were you talking about?
Philippe: Uh, we,
Shubh: we podcast restaurant idea.
Philippe: Yeah. No, this is brilliant.
Joanna: Like doing something where it's like interactive a little more. Yeah. Something happening.
Shubh: You can get restaurant owners to come on
Joanna: Yep. Shop
Shubh: and just be like, Hey, how did you start this
Joanna: restaurant?
No. Yeah. Like some of that. Yeah. I
think
Melissa: we'll let them say that.
Joanna: We'll let them say it. Yeah. And then
Melissa: like you guys,
Joanna: like, that's not what people like, I would scroll past that. Like you have such little time like when someone like, you know, like of what's interesting, like what's a topic Like, you know, even like sometimes the content that we end up coming up with is more so like on the spot of what's happening in the world.
We did our, we did Sports Day yesterday. Spontaneously. What does that mean?
Melissa: If my sports day, she means I wouldn't shut up about the bills losing. 'cause I was really pissed off [00:39:00] about it. And so then she's like, fine, let's just make it into content. Because we
Joanna: talked about Josh Allen and like,
Philippe: oh, what about Hailey Steinfeld
Melissa: though?
Yeah. Yeah. Because we love her and he would obviously buy tasting for her and that's how it all comes together because he's a good husband who would buy a tasting for her.
Shubh: Yeah,
Melissa: he would too. He would love Taste the city.
Shubh: Yeah. Yeah. You
Melissa: know what I
Shubh: mean? She would've had to move out of her condo though.
Melissa: Exactly. Like when she, the condo
Shubh: in the, that was the toughest part about that relationship, I think. Yeah. She was in that great condo. She was in a great condo and then Josh Allen was like, you wanna marry me? No. Love her in a great condo. Exactly. No, they're
Philippe: in a weird duplex.
Shubh: That was a really tough loss though.
Joanna: Yeah, it was. Yeah.
Shubh: So you had Sports Day where you talked about sports.
Joanna: So we talked about sports and then it turned into sports. We went down to launchpad and I taught Melissa how to golf and so we did sportsy thing and I had to Yeah, I'm
Philippe: what is your life?
Joanna: Yeah. But, but that's like, but we work, like I worked till 2:00 AM last night, like financial models, so like, you know, sometimes like it bad. No, I'm
Philippe: envious. That's
Joanna: amazing. Yeah. So, but yes, we went on the Tuesday and like waited, created content and like Launchpad has like [00:40:00] 25,000 followers. We're like, maybe they'll share our stuff and like, which they did.
Which they did. Which they did. And then we had more tasting sales.
Shubh: Let's go
Melissa: golfing.
Shubh: Yeah. Phil, they were out there doing business. I was, I wasn't,
Melissa: let me just talk to the men for a second. The whole point is that we make date nights so easy for you. Okay. You, I know. Are we
Shubh: pitching? Taste the city right now.
You don't need to. I'll pitch it for you.
Melissa: Gimme a second.
Shubh: Don't. Okay, keep going. I love this pitch. Yeah.
Melissa: This is, this is my pitch. That is a real pitch. Let me talk to you for a second. Let paint a picture. All you have to do, yeah, is click like two buttons, Uhhuh and I believe that they can do it. I believe that you can go to our site, pick a date and time.
Yeah, click that button and then check out. And then we have planned everything else. And then you show up to your date with your wonderful, significant other, and you look like a planning God, you look like a genius because now she gets to try three, four different restaurants. She's surprised she can dress up every girl's dream.
And don't even tell 'em. You stay the [00:41:00] city. Just be like, oh yeah, I went, I
Joanna: made all these rezos.
Melissa: We're okay with that.
Shubh: That's right. I think, uh, all the dudes out there. Well, look, I'm a, I'm a single fella. Single fella. Sometimes I go on dates.
Joanna: Yeah. Oh, you have a first date? One actually for you. We have a first date and it's like, okay, so next time that you wanna date, do you remember like Candy Grahams in school?
Yeah. Like you could send some to somebody. So like you would book your date and then put your dates, phone number or their email in the comments and we'll message them being like, Phil has invited you to come into a tasting. And then if they accept, we'll send you. Yes, we'll send you a yes. And they'll meet you at the tasting.
And if they say no, then we'll like, we'll let you refund you down. Easy refund. Yeah. Or, we'll, or we'll find you a plan B Or
Shubh: he can take one of his friends and we can shout it out. Exactly. Talk about
Joanna: what he
Shubh: could have done differently.
Joanna: Chubb's gonna be like waiting in the wings for
Philippe: Yeah.
Joanna: All the rejections.
Like, oh, sorry. There would
Philippe: be, yeah. I like food as much as anybody. Yeah. My premise is I will use this on a first date. Yeah. Uh, some sometime in the next two months.
Melissa: Okay. And then there's cute little texts that get sent out. 'cause you get an exit, right? Like with ta, [00:42:00] the city, there's at least one or two exits.
So if the date's going bad, you can be like,
Philippe: cancel
Joanna: end time. End an end time, which is what we is helpful. So it's only two, two stops. So it's not, I did not realize this was casual and then there's actually like an end time to the date. I was
Melissa: like, do you want to keep going? Yes or no?
Joanna: Do you wanna go to the third spot spots?
Does it
a
Shubh: get sent to both people
Joanna: and Yeah. Yeah. So like eventually with our tech, it'll be like, if you both say yes, then you get the third spot
Shubh: I love.
Joanna: It's like you have to like match. This is our real business.
Shubh: Yes. We're now pitching and talking about your real business. I love the Taste of City concept by family.
Got gift cards over the holidays. I think it's a killer idea. I did not realize, because my wife and I have been together for 25 years. Like,
Joanna: you could do this for your
Shubh: wife. Hold on. She would be so excited. No, no. We're gonna do the date part. I did not know about the first date. That is a product of its That's totally is.
Joanna: It's brand new. We just rolled it out and like honestly you could, it doesn't have to be a first date. Date. Treat your wife like a first date. Like
Shubh: that's So is this the first media property that has talked about this branded product?
Joanna: Actually, you are the first.
Melissa: Yes, you are
Joanna: the first.
Melissa: I'm the first
Shubh: media property on, we can't hear this, but [00:43:00] I'm gonna place some applause.
I can hear this
Joanna: product and like honestly like it's a candygram. So even if you're with somebody like that's really cute to send your spouse like a first date, like Candygram, like come on this tasting with me.
Shubh: I,
Philippe: I actually have an idea to pitch you guys.
Shubh: Oh, okay.
Melissa: Alright.
Shubh: Wait, I wanna get, taste the City.
We don't rate, we're not gonna rate taste the city. 'cause that's your actual startup and it's clearly,
Philippe: yeah.
Shubh: Perfect.
Philippe: Well, did you wanna rate the podcast in the restaurant idea?
Shubh: Uh, no, because I don't think that's a business idea. That's an idea.
Philippe: Okay. So am I, am I free to pitch?
Shubh: You are. The floor is yours. My friends
Philippe: floor is yours.
We, we talked about Winnipeg and you guys launching Taste Seat in Winni. Oh boy. I
Shubh: know what this pitch
Joanna: is. We love Winnipeg,
Philippe: we love Winne. I'm from Winnipeg. I'm a Winnipeg band. Dear
Joanna: Almond,
Philippe: oh dear Almond the best. So great. Okay. But here's my pitch for you though. The, the jets, you're the jet, the jets, the who?
Joanna: Nothing wrong with the jets,
Shubh: the blue bombers,
Philippe: the underground, the blue bombers. The weaker Thans. The weaker Thans. No, exactly. There you go. But my take is, it's actually a pitch to transform the city of Winnipeg. Oh. [00:44:00] We would
Joanna: love to be part of that.
Philippe: And so here's the deal, like truly with, with everything, with, with the states being who they are.
Joanna: Yeah. Yeah.
Philippe: Why take your, your bachelorette or your bachelor party to Vegas, right,
Joanna: right.
Philippe: Or to Scottsdale. Run it in Winnipeg. Winnipeg becomes Winnipeg.
Joanna: Winnipeg.
Philippe: Winnipeg, yeah.
Joanna: Becomes Vegas
Philippe: city. Yeah. Las Peus they actually call it.
Shubh: Yeah. Las Vegas. I love it.
Philippe: Yeah. So, so you turn Winnipeg into Vegas or maybe like more, more, more aptly Reno.
Yeah.
Shubh: Atlantic City parking. Yeah.
Joanna: Like,
Philippe: and, and you just run like, it's a
Joanna: cold Las Vegas. So like, we like, it's a cold Las Vegas, like where, like you, you get a parka when you get off the plane. Everyone
Shubh: gets parka. Yeah. I love because I'm, I, I like to operate, I'm an operator. Logistically, when you're trying to pull people together from across the country.
Winnipeg's, perfect.
Joanna: Winnipeg's.
Shubh: Right in the middle. In the middle. The middle. It
is
Joanna: right in the middle. Be in the middle. Winnepeg,
Melissa: Winnipeg come. I get like giant, uh, city heaters or
Joanna: I like we did because Melissa and I like walked around Winnipeg doing tasting. So like we know how cold it is and it's, [00:45:00] but part
Shubh: of it includes transportation, right?
Joanna: Uber pick up.
Melissa: Okay. So we need an Uber version, basically.
Joanna: Uber version
Philippe: or, or also taxi. I don't even know if you know this about Winnipeg. Taxis have stab shields behind them. I dunno if you think seems like a great Edmonton does, but the whole idea is like. Is like Winnipeg needs something. And obviously I love Winnipeg and the, the, you know, there's some industry starting.
We love the tech ecosystem there. Yeah. But it does need some more industry. And I'm thinking tourism would be a perfect industry. I agree. Let's get big bachelorettes in there and let's design a whole experience for them. Where it's like, what do you need when you're on a bachelor party? You need like, dirty bars.
Chaz: Yep.
Philippe: And, and, and you need good
Joanna: food.
Philippe: Good
Joanna: food
Philippe: and gambling.
Shubh: Gotta have gambling shows.
Joanna: Okay. What about entertainment? Bachelor parties? Maybe the gambling, like, I don't know, like, what do we need? We need shopping. Like I would need shopping. I would want nails
Shubh: and shopping. Do you know, what's something interesting about Winnipeg?
We could, it's shopping wise with Winnipeg, I don't know if it's true anymore, but what used to be true in Winnipeg is that that would be the [00:46:00] first market in Canada. They would trial a bunch of new products. That's true. Because it had the, like the demographic, uh, layout was the most representative of the entire sort of.
Country. It had just like a little bit of everything.
Joanna: Yeah.
Shubh: So maybe the shopping is great in Winnipeg.
Joanna: They have good strip clubs, apparently wanting to laugh on Instagram.
Shubh: Alright. Who said that? Name names don't name
Joanna: names don't names,
Shubh: don't name
Joanna: names.
Shubh: We
Joanna: don't, we don't out people, you
Shubh: know? Yeah, yeah. You have to be five to
Joanna: see that.
Shubh: I think it's great idea. How many sauces would you guys rate turning Winnipeg into Las Pegas? They, they seem concerned about the weather.
Melissa: Okay. No, what I'm, yes. The weather. Yeah. Yeah. And so what I'm seeing from a business. Perspective. Okay. As a CMO.
Shubh: Yeah.
Melissa: If the marketing is gonna be a hell of a ride,
Philippe: it's gonna be tough because you're taking the city that could not get any lower.
Like maybe it has the worst reputation in the world. Thunder
Joanna: Bay, I don't know. Like,
Philippe: like maybe
Melissa: in
Philippe: terms of capital cities, it's, it's, it's with a hockey,
Joanna: well,
Philippe: hockey,
Melissa: I think it's [00:47:00] possible with some giant heaters and so
Philippe: yeah,
Joanna: like they do, like the River Valley is really pretty. It's beautiful there. So like if you did something like on the River Valley there and like they have like in February they do one of their biggest food festivals.
Nobody's going right on the right on the river. On the river. Which is really February, right? In February. Like you'd have to, I don't know if I'm going, you'd have to definitely.
Melissa: What do you guys think was actually a Winnipeg into, uh, Las Vegas? The new Las Vegas. I give it a 50 outta 75.
Philippe: Okay. That's pretty good.
50 sauces.
Melissa: I feel like if you have a really great marketing team, it could be possible.
Shubh: Yeah.
Philippe: And
Shubh: again, I love Winnipeg.
Melissa: Especially if it'd be cheaper.
Shubh: Yeah, well it's paid.
Joanna: Okay. The value of like bringing up, if you're bringing up the US tourist up your $10,000 trip to Vegas, it's gonna be
Shubh: $2,200 in Winni.
Joanna: Right? Right. It's like,
Shubh: yeah.
Joanna: Then be Vegas is so expensive. We can
Melissa: get Jacob Aloy as the,
Shubh: so much Jacob get Bachelorette. I don't think, and
Joanna: Josh Allen. Get Josh Allen there too. Who's Josh
Shubh: Allen and Jacob?
Joanna: Is Josh Allen a part of the plan and Jacob aor? That is
Shubh: the question. Think that, is there this
Joanna: [00:48:00] hilarious, are they a part of the
Shubh: market?
Market strategy? Handsome. I think you need a handsome Winnipeg.
Joanna: Um,
Shubh: I don't think you can
Joanna: import. Okay. Name me a handsome Winnipeg other than Phil,
Shubh: Philip, me, uh, Neil,
Philippe: young Neil. Maybe not Neil Young. Maybe not drawing the crowd he wants. Right. Okay. Uh,
Shubh: I don't know a lot of people from
Philippe: Jonathan TAs. Jonathan said j uh, uh, Justin Bieber has visited
Joanna: Winnipeg.
Melissa: One of our followers says, I've never heard of people wanting to go to win Winnipeg.
Philippe: That's what we're changing. That's
Joanna: what we're changing the rebrand. I am, I'm so sorry. I'm guessing it's a lower, I You're gonna have to say a, like a 20, I'm gonna have to say like a 40
Philippe: because there's so little optimism about Winnipeg.
Like if Winnipeg Chemical. Wait, I,
Joanna: we tried. Do you know why? Because like, we put in a, we went to a pitch competition. Solid effort early on and like solid effort. Really tried to like launch tastings there. Yeah. And like we were, the street vibrancy is so low. There was no one, no one, no one.
Like
Shubh: Saturday night know vibrancy is gonna be way different.
We, the windows
Joanna: were
Philippe: boarded
Shubh: up. All these, all of these Bachelor and bachelorette parties run [00:49:00] around Winnipeg.
Joanna: Yeah. Yeah.
Shubh: Maybe you just,
Melissa: we did wear skirts was, which was bad. Looking back, we wore in winter jackets.
Joanna: We were, we were in parks. We were so cold.
Melissa: And we
Shubh: were still
Melissa: so
Joanna: cold. We have videos of that.
Shubh: I think, uh, here's, here's what I think. Yeah. I love the idea. Thank you. I think it's cost effective.
Philippe: Thank you.
Shubh: Like, hey, you want to go, you want to go to like the very expensive place and Vegas, let's face it. It's overproduced now. Yeah. There's too much happening in Vegas. Winnipeg is just, it's, he just, uh, chill out a little.
There's, that's your come chill out
ape.
Joanna: I'd like to counter that. Like Calgary could be the New Vegas and you could come here and we would offer you tastings and package it. We have a better airport. Somebody just said like, it's so expensive to get to Winnipeg. Like Calgary is actually our airport rock solid.
Like getting
Shubh: places now I think so it's easier than already. Sort of is the Vegas, Banff has kind of got that sort of reputation.
Joanna: What casino are you going to in Banff? Like where's the casino?
Shubh: Yeah, you can gamble anywhere. Now. There's prediction
Joanna: markets.
Shubh: You can
Melissa: just get
Shubh: online and gamble
Joanna: because there anywhere [00:50:00] to in FF
Melissa: tower.
And I just think it's important to have a tower because Winnipeg have one.
Philippe: We got, we got
Joanna: rotating. Does Winnipeg have a tower? We got the Golden boy. That's where they lost it. They lost We
Philippe: a golden boy.
Joanna: Yeah.
Philippe: You know, he's a museum. He's a
Joanna: man in Golden Museum. You have a really good history museum. I like that.
Like museum thing.
Philippe: It's a beautiful museum.
Joanna: Nice.
Shubh: Okay.
Philippe: And we have a rotating restaurant.
Shubh: Alright, sweet. I still have to rate this idea. I uh, I'm also gonna give it a
Joanna: better chance. Yeah.
Shubh: I'm gonna give it a 47. No, but the only reason is because I think you gotta get government buy-in and I think that's gonna slow you down.
Philippe: Yeah.
Melissa: Oh, the government,
Shubh: I mean, we love the government.
Joanna: Actually the government really likes us. We could probably help you with this. Government likes us. I know. Well, I think Winnipeg, we work for the government now.
Melissa: No, we do not. Government try.
Shubh: Shout out Niagara. Um, okay. Ni That's it. Wait, isn't Niagara the Vegas of Canada?
I thought I read that actually. It is.
Melissa: It actually
Joanna: is actually it really true. Las Vegas of Canada. Like, and it's a really cool place. That's a really good
Melissa: point.
Shubh: But can't you already kind of, you can't just fly straight into Niagara, [00:51:00] you've gotta fly somewhere else, which is really important.
Joanna: Hamilton's really close too.
Shubh: It's still like Buffalo is closer. A good 40, 40 minutes at least. And you gotta cross the board. Buffalo's
Melissa: like 30 minutes. Yeah. But it's easy peasy. Uh.
Shubh: I think, I still think you should do it.
Melissa: And you might see Josh Allen on your way over.
Shubh: Yeah. The
Melissa: most important
part.
Shubh: Yeah. Yeah. There's no Josh Allen in Winnipeg.
Haley Steinfeld.
Joanna: What are we, we were gonna do a wing tasting. Exactly. And even better, honestly,
Shubh: it feels like the,
Joanna: we were gonna do a wing tasting, uh, experience in Buffalo, actually. Like where you pop around, watch football and like go to a different wing
Shubh: spots. It sounds like a great idea
Joanna: because they're like all about
Shubh: you should do that.
What could in Winnipeg, what would you do? What, what kind of taste? If they had to set up a tasting That was Winnipeg. Yeah. What Winnipeg
Joanna: tasting.
Shubh: Maybe the issue is when you went out there and pitched, you didn't understand. The local market. Well,
Philippe: yeah, that's right. What, what do, what do we think? I do think that Winnipeg, you need like a, a, a seasoned guide to take you around a
Joanna: seasoned guide.
Philippe: So if you do a Winnipeg tasting, you should call it like Philips Guide to Winnipeg. Yeah, yeah. And I would actually get like the cool underground spots. It would take you to like, [00:52:00] you know, handsome daughter. It would take, you're a new creator
Joanna: actually. So this is actually the evolution of our model. I'm so glad, glad that stuff.
Really, it's finding local people that are really passionate about food and creating communities.
Philippe: Yeah.
Joanna: And like actually like launching it themselves and being our partners.
Philippe: We, we should collab on a, on first date night. Philip's first date. Yeah. Like,
Joanna: can we actually just like, follow you on your first date with the video?
Like
first
Shubh: date? Yes. We just had, on the last episode, we had a pitch around or couples would arrange like instead of Tinder with the. People finding. Oh yeah. That's Couples would arranges. Yeah, the couples would arrange, but then part of I was like, oh, there should be an upsell where the couples get to watch the date after.
Joanna: Oh yeah. Like that would be like, 'cause
Shubh: yeah.
Joanna: People,
Shubh: we just, people watch all the time, right? Yeah. Want reality
Joanna: television.
Shubh: Yeah. I like the idea of adding that into the taste The city experience. People are
Joanna: gonna think that they're booking a date with you. It's gonna be problematic or helpful maybe. I don't know.
Oh, I see. Yeah. No, that's a good question. Maybe they're thinking. So we actually, so one of the fails of our business when it first started was we, we did a singles [00:53:00] jingle mingle.
Melissa: We were asked to
Joanna: do it, we were asked to do it jingle, yeah. Christmas time and like, yeah, Christmas time. But it was like to bring single people together and like they were gonna hop between three different bars and whatnot.
And we set it up really fast and like it was our first year. And so we got all these applicants and we put, they booked the tastings and it was great. We had, uh, 20 people sign up. Yeah. And 18 women and two men.
Philippe: No way. Two-sided marketplace. But you, way more women than men. Doesn't that usually
Melissa: option. But you didn't do survey, which was.
Stupid.
Joanna: Yeah,
Melissa: because you, you need to have at least an even number.
Philippe: Well
Melissa: those men probably have the right
Joanna: time. Those two men or have been actually like, they're still talking about it taking community for life. Like
Philippe: yeah, definitely.
Joanna: Like this is the best project we
Philippe: ever there. There's no way they're still single right there.
They
Joanna: probably,
Melissa: yeah, we, we did do a single survey because we do plan on launch, like we've started with the first date, but we do plan on launching like, you know, the meetup with strangers Meet up with singles? No, go on a tasting.
Joanna: Okay.
Melissa: So you go on a tasting and you meet up with singles that are like within your kind of, yeah.
Take the surveys and we match you. Not with a single person, but like, you know, say it's five and [00:54:00] five or four and four and you know that it's gonna be people that are kinda within the age range, have the same, you know, hobbies as you, things like that.
Joanna: But the best part about it in comparison to like the regular format for that right now is just go meet for a dinner.
But with the tasting you have like three exit strategies in case you like show because like I can't, so good. I would not be able to like showing up to and sitting down to a full dinner with strangers terrifies me. But like if I can show up, have a bite to eat and then be like. I'm out. This is not, this is awkward.
Exactly.
Shubh: There's
Joanna: the
exit
Shubh: strategy is key. There's a business application to this too. Right? Because we, you gotta meet with somebody, they want to pitch you an idea, they talk to you and I'm like, Ugh, I gotta get outta here.
Joanna: Yes. Yeah.
Shubh: So you can just, uh, you just,
Joanna: you know, the client, well, the client meeting is actually one that we have as well.
But you can't really like just drop your client most often. Like, I mean, at some point you
Shubh: can,
Joanna: you can actually,
Philippe: what, what would be so good is you ever have someone like visiting you from out of town. Yes. And it's like a business meeting and you're like, uh, cool. Like, I'll take you out tonight. Yeah. It would be great to be like.
Take them to the first spot and then go and now [00:55:00] follow to the city for you're off. Put your own
Joanna: now.
Philippe: Yeah. Goodbye.
Joanna: Goodbye. Exactly. I gotta go. I had one drink with you now Explore the city. Bought this experience, need for kind of a good idea. It's kind of like a gift.
Philippe: Like I, yeah. My real friends are like at a ni at another restaurant I wanna go to, but you know, here you go buddy.
I
Shubh: that for golf courses too. Like, like a three hole after three holes on a business meeting. You'd be like, I, I gotta
Joanna: true.
Philippe: Yeah. Just a humanoid
Melissa: robot.
Joanna: A time. I don't think I would ever leave a golf course if I didn't have to. She's a golf. Oh, you love that stuff. I do. I do love that.
Shubh: And you just taught Melissa and she
Melissa: can talk
Joanna: to anybody, Melissa?
Yeah. Yeah. I, I now made it a part of our business strategy. So like, actually I just like trash talked this like team in front of me at a tech swing golf tournament last year. Really? And really turned out, he was like the head of something and like I saw him at an event, he came over and he was like, Hey, and like gave me a hug and whatever.
And this girl that I know was like, how did you get him to talk to you? He never talked to anybody. And I was like, I don't know. I. Trash. Talk him on a golf course for five. Let's go. That's a huge one. Turns out if you tell him he has a terrible golf swing. Over Over. Yeah.
Shubh: Between the dragon. Between the dragon and experience and this [00:56:00] one, what we've learned is if you're just a little bit rude to people, they're more likely to
Joanna: invest in your question.
Never rude. Never rude. Just like,
Shubh: well,
Joanna: slave, rude, intentional.
Shubh: Yeah. Be rude.
Joanna: Not,
Shubh: yeah. Somewhat rude. Okay. Um, rude.
Joanna: Trash. Talking Trash. Talking
Shubh: golf. Not much support. Not as much Support for taste. The Winnipeg, oh, sorry. For, for Las Pegas. Las Vegas. Las Vegas. But, but, but tons of support for taste. The Winnipeg sponsored by and led Philippine.
Melissa: Yeah. That's a better idea. I
Joanna: think it's better idea. Philip Winnipeg. Can you get us in with deer and almond? 'cause if they would take our taste, they're like, oh my God.
Melissa: And then we follow you around on your date night. And Will, will he find love? Yes or no? That's
Shubh: not a business whole story. My answer is
Philippe: always no.
Joanna: And we just bring him back like he's just like, you just like drop off the lady at the condo building at the end of the building. And then Did you enjoy Pip lips?
Shubh: Yeah. Turns out she's living there for, turns out she's living there forever.
Joanna: Um, pip slips
Philippe: is the goodie bag.
Joanna: The [00:57:00] good.
Philippe: Thanks for getting that.
Here's
pip
Joanna: slips. I think we have like
Shubh: one way or another. You're getting pip lips on those lips tonight. Uh, I'm not, I'm not gonna, yeah, and it's the other, it's never the one way. It's always
Joanna: the, I think, I think that we've come out of this with several business ideas. All that could converge and like cross collaborate with one another is helpful.
Shubh: Yeah. I, yeah. I love all of them. Um, okay, we're gonna wrap up here. Yeah,
Joanna: that said hard stop at four and it's 4 0 1, so
Shubh: I
Joanna: gives us,
Shubh: yeah, I do like you guys a lot. Um, this, uh, was great. I love the condo building idea. I love the. Turning it into a TV show idea even more.
Melissa: Yeah. Yeah. Sam, I actually
Shubh: just, I, while I do like the Las Pegas idea a lot, I do also understand where these guys are coming from with some of the potential limitations.
So I think as a, as a launchpad of, of Philip guided tour. Philip and taste the city. Yeah. Tech Thursday and Taste the City Joint venture. Yeah. In Winnipeg. I think that would, that's gonna, that's [00:58:00] gonna work. You could take everybody from the Tech Thursday event.
Joanna: Yeah. Honestly, I've like thought for a while you should do like swish up tech, like the panel I like, and this is no shade 'cause I, everybody does the panel discussions, but like, what if we did it where we went to three different spots and at each spot was a different speaker that talked for just a little bit and it was more like intimate, like sit around.
Yes. Like a, a, a fireplace kind of fireside chat. Yeah,
Shubh: yeah, yeah.
Joanna: You're
Shubh: saying a fireside chat that actually has fire.
Joanna: Yeah. Yeah. But like, you talk to one like, 'cause like everybody gets cut off and when they're talking together Yeah. It's like a disjointed conversation. And so it doesn't always feel but like to hear from one person, one person, and then maybe at the end all of them come together.
Like, and then at one
Shubh: of the stops we could do a live recording of this podcast.
Joanna: Oh yeah. We've done like the live, like taste. The city has gone live on Instagram. Yeah. On a tasting road and stuff.
Philippe: Yeah.
Joanna: It's super fun. You just gotta do it.
Philippe: Yeah. That's awesome. I, that'd be great. I did actually, like my friend, I was in Asana.
This is a, a, I'll keep it super short, but in
Joanna: Asana.
Philippe: I was in Asana with my friend and she like, yeah,
Shubh: not Asana, the project management software company, although we'd like to hear from them too. Yeah, sure.
Philippe: But, uh, she was, uh, [00:59:00] uh, she moved here from Australia a couple years ago and we were chatting. I was like, yeah, I'm going to Winnipeg for my friend's 30th.
She's like, oh, I've never been. I was like. You should come. And she's like, okay, I just booked a flight to come with me like a week later. And so we, I just did pips lips in Winne or, or sorry. Pips trips. Pips trips. P trips, trips in Winnipeg, pips trips and showed her around. She had like the best time we went to like, and, and I think part of the twerk could be just like visiting my friends as well, you know, Winnipeg's all about the people.
Yeah. You know, and
Shubh: all my friends would love to, you know, say hi to visitors and uh, come chill out with Pips trips, with Pips trips, pip trips
Melissa: and the goodie bags, pip slips. It's
Joanna: just is all coming
Melissa: together.
Joanna: It's all coming together.
Shubh: It really did come together like, alright, boom. Uh,
Joanna: we showed up here today not knowing what this was gonna be about.
And that's kind of sometimes best way to do it.
Shubh: That's the only way to do, I think that's how
Melissa: we, our, I think he's really trying to convince us that Winnipeg is a hotpot. Yeah. I think he is also,
Shubh: this is literally how every episode goes. We show up not knowing what we're gonna do. Yeah. And then, uh, sometimes it works.
It's only not worked once and, uh, you knows
Joanna: [01:00:00] they won't be invited back
Shubh: and, and, uh, that episode never seen. We're
Melissa: so sorry. If you're wondering what Pip's Lips is, there's someone here. Basically his name is Pips. And talk
Shubh: to Corey
Melissa: Organics if
Shubh: you want that. They're not gonna wonder because you're gonna tag our podcast.
They're gonna go back and listen to episode two,
Melissa: go back and listen.
Joanna: Yes'.
Shubh: And then they're gonna be like, oh, that's what they were talking about. Oh, that's what
Joanna: Pip lips. You don't wanna miss it. You need the lore. You need to understand the lore.
Shubh: Yeah. It is, it's not intended to be episodic, but it is entirely turned out that way.
Where you have to listen now Yeah. To ca to keep up
Joanna: to understand what we do. Which
Philippe: is the way you wanna do a podcast.
Shubh: Yeah,
Joanna: yeah, yeah. Which is like kind of how we run our socialism stuff.
Shubh: Yeah, yeah, yeah. Wait, what
Joanna: did they talking about? Understand.
Shubh: Um, okay guys, I really do appreciate you coming in. This was great.
Sorry, the table almost fell on top of you.
Joanna: That was Melissa's fault.
Shubh: Uh, love all the pitches, love what you guys are doing. Uh, everybody out there who's listening, which is obviously a way larger audience than Joanna, Melissa, have obviously, uh, go to, uh, taste the city.ca.
Chaz: Yep. Yes,
Shubh: please. [01:01:00] You got the domain right?
Joanna: Ooh.
Shubh: Uh, pick up a gift card or if you know the tour you want to use already. Get a tour. It makes a great gift at the holidays store. Anytime you
Joanna: Valentine's,
Shubh: Valentine's Day's coming up.
Joanna: Yeah. Here it's planned
Shubh: Taste. The city.
Joanna: Don't go out on Valentine's Day because like everything's packed. Like why would you go
to
Shubh: a
Joanna: restaurant on the day?
Shubh: Yeah. Ladies out there if you need a first date exit strategy. Yep.
Joanna: Yep. First date. Yep. We're there for first date. And Candy Grahams like send, like send this like Sheb send your wife. Like she was gonna, she's gonna be so like he's sending me this cute little tasting.
Shubh: Yeah, but she listens until now. She'll know it was your idea not mine.
Ah, yeah,
Joanna: that's, sorry. That's okay.
Shubh: But actually we got a couple weeks, hold on. We got, we a couple of weeks before this hits the streets. Can tell our
Joanna: you have she be
Philippe: post app.
Joanna: It's brand new. Unless she's on our live right now. She follows us. Actually you could be our, one of our, I dunno, people test. Oh,
Shubh: we're gonna need a promo code.
I'm just kidding. I'm just kidding. I'm just kidding. Uh, awesome guys, thank you so much for coming in. Really appreciate it. Best of luck with Taste City and like I, I mean it. Everybody out there go buy a tour, [01:02:00] get a gift card, a tasting, do a tasting, do all those things, boom. And we'll see you in Winnipeg.
Joanna: See you and win
Shubh: Ape. Actually, we're never gonna be allowed back.
Joanna: Shrewbury.
Shubh: Phil? Bury Phil. Yeah. Sh Shrewbury.
Philippe: The Shrewsbury.
Shubh: Alright, we're out
Chaz: there. That, that was a
Shubh: listing back to that one brought back, uh, a lot of, uh, energy and memories. Uh, Chaz, I realize I should now send you the rough cut of these before we record these intros and outros so you can actually listen to them so you know what was happening
Philippe: or you could just
Shubh: join when you weren't able to
Philippe: join the, the recordings.
Shubh: Yeah. That one. He actually told us he couldn't join, so Yeah. But yes.
Chaz: Well,
Shubh: joining the recordings would also be helpful.
Chaz: For the record, it's almost seven o'clock on a Tuesday and I'm here recording, so that should be at least
Shubh: pretty good, at least a plus
Chaz: one.
Shubh: You know what they call six 40 in Stratford?
They call it 20 minutes to Taco Bell clock.
Philippe: Is that a Drake song? Six. Six 40 in Stratford
Shubh: is, I thought you were gonna say it's 20 minutes to [01:03:00] Taco Bell, a clock, a Drake song. Well,
Philippe: fun fact,
Shubh: Drake, and if its not, it should be. Well, Drake
Chaz: has shouted out Stratford in songs before. So
Philippe: really
Shubh: as he shouted out the, as he shouted out, taco Bell in Stratford,
Chaz: well, he says he gets lunch in Strafford, so he didn't say where.
Philippe: Oh shit. What song is that? I wanna go back and listen.
Chaz: Uh, it's one of his freestyles. I don't know. I'll send you the link.
Philippe: Yes. Is it, is it Who shuts out Winnipeg? I think it's uh, does he? Oh no, he goes cold like Minnesota. It's just the
Shubh: weaker Weaker. The weaker than, yeah,
Philippe: the weaker. That's a sad, that's a sad one.
That's, uh,
Shubh: yeah,
Philippe: that's a song. When I went to university I'd be like, oh, I'm from Winnipeg. And then they would just, they would start singing, I Hate Winnipeg. And I'd be like,
Shubh: you can't sing more than that, otherwise we have to pay for it.
Philippe: Right. Yeah. But I was like, what the hell? What is that? But I guess it's just a song.
Yeah. But
Shubh: we will, uh, put the link to that song in the show notes.
Philippe: Yeah. And Chaz,
Shubh: so everyone can enjoy
Philippe: it. Chaz, what do you think of, uh, Winnipeg [01:04:00] becoming the Las Vegas of Canada?
Chaz: Well, I mean, I'm extremely loyal to Niagara Falls. I think it's an extremely underrated city. Um, a lot of people talk smack about the, the falls.
We, this did
Shubh: come up on the episode.
Chaz: Yeah.
That,
Shubh: uh, Niagara Falls is already the Las Vegas of Canada, but continue. Yep.
Chaz: I just, I, I, I don't know. A lot of people around here talk shit about Niagara Falls and all this stuff. I think it's the best, and I think it's definitely the closest thing to Vegas that Canada has to offer right now.
But I am also a diehard Jets fan, so if I had an excuse to go there and gamble and watch the Jets, that would be kind of fun.
Shubh: Can I ask Alar clarifying question about Niagara Falls? Phil, just, um, nearest airport to Niagara Falls. Hamilton or Buffalo?
Chaz: Buffalo, for sure.
Philippe: So, so you fly to Buffalo and then you cross a border and then you go drive
Chaz: it?
Philippe: I would,
Chaz: I would literally drive through Niagara Falls to get to Buffalo. [01:05:00]
Philippe: Yeah.
Shubh: Yeah. You, you gotta drive. I'm saying if we're turning Niagara Falls, if you guys guys are taking two, if I'm moderating a debate here mm-hmm. Be it resolved that the new Las Vegas of Canada is Winnipeg mm-hmm. And no longer Niagara Falls.
And you guys were each taking the position for, uh, each city. I think transportation is a big part of this. Like, if, okay, so if I wanna jump out to Niagara Falls mm-hmm. I gotta fly out there. I'm flying into Hamilton from Calgary. It's so dark. Like I'm not crossing the border and coming back. No. Yeah.
Chaz: I mean, if you're flying from out west, yeah.
Hamilton would be fine. I think it's, I don't think it's that
Shubh: far of a drive, but I got an hour and a half from Hamilton into the falls. What are we talking tops?
Chaz: An hour and a half tops. So I think, I would think it would be between 40 and an hour. 10 would be my guess.
Philippe: Winnipeg Pipa.
Shubh: How, how far is it from the Winnipeg airport to, uh, where all the magic happens in Winnipeg?
Philippe: You got 25 minutes and you're, and you already have a stack on red.
Chaz: Uh, does
Shubh: sound kind. Wait, did [01:06:00] we establish, is there are, do we have casinos in Winnipeg?
Philippe: There's, there's a shark shark club right by, uh, downtown. But we could add another, I think you've gotta add another for this to work. What's,
Chaz: isn't there a big hotel and casino there that's like island themed or something like that?
Philippe: Oh, yeah. Um, McGilvery McGilvery I think is, oh, they have, my Winnipeg friends are gonna roast me if they hear this.
Chaz: I see ads for them at the Jets game all the time. It looks kind of sick, but then
Philippe: again, I like Niagara
Chaz: Falls.
Philippe: Chaz, what turned you into a Jets fan?
Chaz: Um, my love for Patrick Linea.
Philippe: Hey, rest in peace.
Chaz: And then, yeah, then well,
Philippe: he's, well, he's not dead in Montreal.
Shubh: Not, uh, Patrick Linea very much still alive. Yes,
Philippe: but he's not a jet, so I don't really care about him anymore.
Shubh: But, uh, so the net net of this is, is, uh, Chaz thinks that. Uh, Niagara Falls is currently the Las Vegas candidate. Well,
Chaz: that's a [01:07:00] fact. I mean, Winnipeg could potentially overthrow it, but right now it's not really up for debate, is it?
Shubh: But pip pip is positioning Las Vegas.
Philippe: Yeah, Las Pega. It even has a better name.
Chaz: That is pretty good.
Shubh: Yeah. I can't
Chaz: deny
Philippe: that.
Shubh: Niagara Falls and
Philippe: Niagara Falls is confusing. Like, where am I going? Am I going to Niagara Falls or am I going to Niagara on the lake? What is that? What's up with that? What's up with those two places being different?
Are
you
Shubh: waterfall or you a lake? Make up your goddamn mind.
Philippe: You know what I mean? But those are different places that people go. I don't understand the difference. Well,
Shubh: are you running water or still water?
Chaz: Well, I mean, they're close enough that it's, it's not like they're on like two totally different ends of Ontario or whatever.
Like they're in the same region and whatnot.
Philippe: What is the difference between, one is like fancy wine country and the other one is like the dirtiest place you can go,
Chaz: whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa. Relax.
Philippe: It was
Shubh: just lashing out. Now.
Philippe: Am I [01:08:00] wrong? That's what those two places are, right? One is like really fancy wine country.
Chaz: Yeah. Yeah. They do produce a lot of wine in Niagara, which is another plus. I don't think Winnipeg can do that.
Shubh: Okay. So Toronto to do improv,
Philippe: we, we produce Crown Royal
Shubh: Toronto to do improv up to Muskoka to check out Chaz's Cabin, down to Stratford to check out his apartment over to Niagara Falls. To, to just see how it stacks up.
Philippe: Yeah. See what, see what work we have to do to surpass them.
Shubh: Yeah. Chaz, could you prepare a future pitch on how to, how to elevate Niagara Falls to the next, to the next level? I'm already working on it.
Uh, I don't even remember what we were talking about. We
Chaz: were talking about the jets being sick.
Shubh: Yeah. Something about Winnipeg. There was a lot of Winnipeg talk the last couple episodes, more Winnipeg. I have talked about Winnipeg more on the last two episodes of this podcast than I have in my entire life.
And I once ran a half marathon in Winnipeg.
Chaz: Wow. Wow. [01:09:00]
Philippe: That's,
Shubh: yeah, I was much younger. Sounds cold. Yep.
Philippe: I'm going to fe about Voyager Fero this weekend.
It's, it's a, it's a celebration of the European fur traders that would come over to the northwest and, uh, um, and transport first from the northwest back to Montreal.
Shubh: Not, that's not all they brought with them.
Philippe: It, it's over Louis Rio's birthday.
Shubh: I'm gonna put this in the show notes too. I saw a very funny tweet, um, talking about the history of the Hudson's base being a fur traders in Canada, and how they became this very successful corporation, effectively, like, ran the country, governed the country for a very, very long time.
And it was a couple of Americans just talking about this history, which they found extremely fascinating. And then one of the guys goes, I, for one, can't uh, wait until Shopify becomes the official government of Canada. So yes, lots of fur trading talk this week too. [01:10:00] Winnipeg fur trading. Uh, Phil's going home for a big, uh, celebration.
Louis reel's,
Philippe: Louis Rialtos
Shubh: celebrating Louis Rell. It's, is it his day?
Philippe: It's, yeah. Uh, on Monday we, it's called Family Day in Alberta, but it's called Louis Riel Day in Manitoba. Uh, so gonna go there and, and pay homage to the, to the, to the father of Manitoba. Wow. I know too much about Louis Reel these days.
I'm happy to, you know, Chaz, if, if you wanna, we should just create a Louis Reel podcast. To be honest,
Shubh: I I did pitch this idea to you right, to do like 12 episodes on just like this story of Louis Reel.
Philippe: Yeah,
Shubh: I think you should do it. Uh, it's pretty fascinating actually. And I'm not even, I'm not even doing a bit, it's actually quite interesting now that Phil's been making me learn about it.
And I think I did learn about in grade eight to be clear, but they, they don't teach you the exciting version in eighth grade.
Chaz: Yeah, I know the name. Other than that, I don't think I could tell you another thing about Louis Al, [01:11:00] but we'll save that for another episode.
Shubh: Cha, is Peyton in the car right now?
Honking the horn saying it's Taco Bell time?
Chaz: No, but I'm sure I got a couple text messages.
Shubh: Yeah. Yeah, you got a couple texts like it's, it's, uh, taco Bell clock. Yep. Uh, before you go to Taco Bell, guys, I bought, you know, you ever had to, you guys bought concert tickets, Ticketmaster, where you have to queue up and then you get, you ever done this before?
Yep. I've never done it before. I did it today. Uh, maybe one of the most stressful experiences in my life. I dunno how people do it. You wait, I wait. It was like a second and a half and suddenly I was 5400th in line. How does that happen? There's a pitch I would like, uh, somebody to reinvent, queuing and ticket buying technology for concerts to make it more accessible to people.
Philippe: Let's take
Shubh: on Live
Philippe: Nation.
Shubh: Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Can you take on that monopoly? So Fellas podcast. It's going well. Everything going well. Chaz moving into the apartment next week. You need [01:12:00] help moving. Phil will come out. Phil's halfway there already. He's gonna be a Winnipeg already. Yeah, that would be great.
Right? Just one more hop bit. Just
Philippe: Yeah, let's do it.
Shubh: If you go Calgary, Calgary, Winnipeg, Buffalo,
Philippe: we can gamble.
Shubh: Get stopped on the bridge because it'll be closed.
Philippe: I'm gonna, I'm gonna, I'm I, that's gonna be my first stop. 10:00 AM going right to Shark Club. I'm gonna put 50 bucks on red and if I hit, it's gonna be the craziest weekend in Winnipeg.
What am I gonna do with a hundred bucks? Oh my God. I don't know.
Shubh: Damn. Uh, I've heard it's Maggi. Raise MacGill. Raise Maggi. That's where you gotta, McGill. McGill Goodies
Philippe: mcg. What
Shubh: was it called,
Philippe: I think right?
Shubh: McGill
Philippe: MCG Casinos in
Shubh: MacGyver's.
Philippe: That's a wild name for Philip Mixed Philip. How do you forget that that's gets go?
Shubh: This casino is named Mick Phillips and you don't know what its name is.
Philippe: Yeah, I mean,
Shubh: it's like me, me not knowing a place called Mick Shrubs.
Chaz: That's
Philippe: exactly what it's like.[01:13:00]
I, I don't know much about Mick Phillips, but I know I'm gonna be making a lot of money there.
Shubh: This got this outros. This outros gonna be like, Hey guys, how'd you enjoy that episode? Good. Yep. Alright, Chaz, enjoy Taco Bell. No, I think, uh, for the six people who will listen to this podcast in Winnipeg, the 20 minutes we just did on Winnipeg plus the 20 minutes in the episode that we're done on Winnipeg is, I think really gonna resonate.
Or is this your way of asking me if your family's listening to this podcast? Because I think. Okay. I, I don't have the heart to tell you what the Winnipeg stats look like. Let me put it that way. Alright, well, uh, fellas, Chaz, I do not wanna stand in your way of the Gordito Crunch.
Chaz: Thank you.
Shubh: I've, I've heard what happens to a person when they [01:14:00] stand between you and was it nacho fries?
Yeah, at Taco Bell. Nacho fries. All right. Can we, can you take a picture of this?
Chaz: Yep.
Shubh: Take a picture of your meal. Yes. Amazing. Uh, Phillip, thanks for jumping on.
Philippe: Thanks for having me.
Shubh: And yeah, this was a little weird. It was this, we got a little, this was wide ranging. All those Patrick Linea fans out there, I love this episode.
Philippe: And remember to subscribe.
Shubh: Oh, yes. Right. Uh, follow, subscribe. Spotify Apple Podcast. YouTube. Follow us on LinkedIn. Follow us on Instagram. Tell everybody the content you just heard. 80% of which I will cut out from this outro, scintillating.
Philippe: Yeah. And we don't have a Patreon, but you could just Venmo Shaz directly.
Chaz: Yeah.
Shubh: Can't Venmo in this country? You gotta interact. E-transfer.
Chaz: I got PayPal.
Shubh: Just send them, send him [01:15:00] Taco Bell gift cards. Oh yeah, that works too. Actually,
Chaz: that'd probably be, that would just cut out the middleman for me.
Shubh: Okay. Boy, you episode what? What episode did I say this was for? This was, this is Renee.
We'll see you back on episode 10. See you later
gang.
